Ammonites – Freestanding Glass Art
The carved detail of this panel plays with the light beautifully and displays three dimentional depth.
This is my interpretation in glass of three fossilised ammonites. Ammonites were molluscs and are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e., octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish) than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the living Nautilus species. Their fossils can be found in various areas of the world and this piece was inspired by a visit to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset.
In this panel I use transparent grey glass and each ammonite's detail is carved into the back of the panel. There is crushed and pre-fused glass detail to the front of the panel giving an extra texture.
This piece is freestanding and works well in a range of postions. It is mounted onto an oak base which has been oiled to bring out the beauty of the wood grain.
Glass panel size is approx: 205 x 305mm
Oak base size is approx: 170 x 92mm
Overall height approx: 343mm
This glass panel comes in a gift box and the base is wrapped in acid free tissue paper. All packaged well for delivery.
