'King of the River' – Freestanding Glass Art
Anyone that has been fortunate enought to catch a glimpse of a Kingfiher on a river bank or pond will know what a beautiful and vibrant little bird they are. In this kilnformed glass piece I have tried to capture a little of that beauty for you to have in your home. Made using vibrant sheet and crushed glasses that are hand cut and then go through firings in the kiln at very high temperatures, then cooled with care to produce this glass panel which then sits on an oak base.
The ancient Greeks believed the Gods turned two distraught lovers into Kingfishers:
Ceyx (SEE-ix) and Alcyone (al-SY-uh-nee) loved each other so much, they called each other Zeus and Hera. In a rage, the great god Zeus threw a thunderbolt, striking Ceyx’s ship and sending him to the bottom of the sea. When Alcyone learned the news, she was so distraught, she threw herself into the sea after him. The gods, humbled by Ceyx and Alcyone’s love, took pity on them and transformed them into a pair of beautiful birds — the halcyon birds, or the birds we know as Kingfishers. Even today, many kingfishers have echoes of this story in their scientific names.
This piece is freestanding and works well in a range of postions.
Glass panel size is approx: 250 x 170mm - Glass panel is an offset diamond shape.
Oak base approx 100x 94mm
The glass fixing tightens using a slot top screwdriver and comes complete with a decorative cap.
This glass panel comes in a gift box and the base is wrapped in acid free tissue paper. All packaged well for delivery.
